Slip Resistance Testing
Accurate, independent slip resistance testing to Irish and European standards.
BHP Laboratories is the largest independent materials testing laboratory in Ireland providing a wide range of engineering & scientific measuring, testing and analysing services to numerous industries throughout Ireland and the UK. We provide a comprehensive range of testing and analysing solutions for accurate and reliable slip resistance testing.
Slip resistance testing is an important safety assessment used to evaluate the slip potential of flooring surfaces in commercial, industrial, public, and residential environments. In Ireland, slip resistance testing helps property owners, employers, contractors, and facility managers identify slip hazards, reduce the risk of accidents, and demonstrate compliance with health and safety obligations.
BHP’s testing service is highly respected in the industry carried out on a wide range of surfaces, including tiles, concrete, vinyl, resin flooring, paving, walkways, ramps, stairways, and external pedestrian areas and roads. Assessments may be performed on new installations, existing floors, or following slip incidents and safety investigations.
Slip resistance testing measures the friction characteristics of a surface under dry and/or wet conditions using recognised industry methods and equipment. The results provide an objective assessment of slip risk and can help determine whether remedial action, maintenance improvements, or surface treatments are required.
Some of the services provided by our slip resistance testing department include:
- Floor Safety Audits: Routine assessment of all floors within a premise to determine the slip potential
- Flooring Product Certification: Independent PTV certification of tile, vinyl, resin, and stone flooring products.
- Laboratory Slip Testing: Send your samples of any relevant materials to our INAB ISO 17025 accredited laboratory for independent testing.
- Wet Area Slip Testing: BHP provide specialist pendulum slip testing for swimming pools, wet rooms, commercial kitchens, shower facilities, and spa environments.
- Expert Witness: BHP can act on behalf of customer by providing independent technical interpretation and expert support in legal, regulatory, and dispute resolution proceedings.
- Roads & Road Surfaces: Testing of asphalt surfaces and road line marking materials is essential to ensure the safety, durability, and performance of road infrastructure. These assessments help verify that materials meet relevant specifications, provide adequate skid resistance and visibility, and remain fit for purpose throughout their service life.
- Standards: The determination of slip resistance of materials is undertaken in many ways. The following standards help to assess and manage this:
- BS EN 16165:2021 Determination of slip resistance of pedestrian surfaces – Methods of evaluation
- BS EN 13036-4-2011 Road and Airfield Surface Characteristics – Test Methods Part 4: Method for measurement of slip/skid resistance of a surface: the pendulum test.
- BS7979 Pendulum Slip Testing
- UK Slip Resistance Group Guidelines for Assessment of Floor Slip Resistance 2016
BHP is accredited by the Irish National Accreditation Board (INAB) to ISO 17025. Our long-standing practice of laboratory testing excellence brings rigorous inspection procedures and high standards of quality control to all our operations, procedures and services.
